We think families and referral sources make better decisions when they ask the same direct questions of every home they’re considering, not just us. Here’s the list we’d want someone to bring to any phone call, including one with us.
- Is the home certified by a recognized standard? A state affiliate of the National Alliance for Recovery Residences (NARR) means the home answers to a real, external standard, not just its own claims.
- Are house managers professionally trained, or just live-in landlords? There’s a real difference between someone collecting rent and a NARR-trained house manager who actively supports recovery.
- How many people share a room, and are bunk beds used? Room setup affects both comfort and dignity — ask specifically, don’t assume.
- Is there a clear, consistently enforced policy for rule violations? Ask what actually happens, not just what’s written. See how we handle rule violations for an example of a direct answer.
- Is random drug testing part of the program? Zero-tolerance only means something if it’s actually tested and enforced.
- Does the home require residents to continue outpatient treatment? A recovery residence supports treatment; it shouldn’t replace it. Read more on how sober living works alongside outpatient treatment.
- Is there a fixed length of stay, or does it flex to your pace? A rigid timeline doesn’t fit everyone’s recovery at the same speed.
- Is pricing transparent, and what does it actually include? Most reputable homes discuss fees by phone rather than publishing rates online — that’s normal, not a red flag, but you should still get a clear answer. See how payment works here.
- Does the home accommodate or exclude Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)? This is a real, significant difference between programs. We’re upfront that we do not accommodate or administer MAT.
- What’s the referral or admissions process, and how fast can someone move in? See what our own process looks like as one example of what a clear process should feel like.
- Is the home upfront about what happens after residents leave? A home that’s thought this through will have a real answer. Read what happens after Springtime Living.
- Does the home welcome you honestly, without discrimination? Ask directly rather than assuming. We’ve written honestly about this for veterans and residents of any faith.
We’d rather you ask us these same 12 questions than take our word for anything. Call us at (860) 337-1029 — we’re glad to answer all of them directly.
