We hear “sober living” used to describe everything from a bare-bones house with bunk beds to a genuinely comfortable home with real oversight, and we think the difference is worth explaining, since it affects both your day-to-day experience and your actual chances at a stable recovery.
It’s Not Just About Amenities
We’d push back on the idea that “premium” just means nicer furniture. Comfort matters — no bunk beds, no more than two residents per room, a real workspace, a place that feels like a home rather than an institution — but on its own, comfort doesn’t make a recovery residence better. What actually separates a premium home from a standard one is the combination of comfort and real structure.
What We Think “Premium” Actually Means
| Standard Sober Living | Premium Sober Living (Our Standard) |
|---|---|
| Shared rooms, sometimes bunk beds | Max 2 residents per room, never bunk beds |
| House manager with no formal training | NARR-trained house managers |
| Self-certified “sober living” claim | CTARR-certified, accountable to a real state standard |
| Rules enforced inconsistently | Zero-tolerance policy, enforced the same way every time |
| No clinical oversight behind the program | Trauma-informed oversight from a licensed clinical psychologist |
Why We Don’t Think Structure and Comfort Compete
We built Springtime Living around the idea that dignity and accountability aren’t a trade-off. A resident who feels respected — who has a real bed, a real workspace, a home that doesn’t feel institutional — is also a resident who’s more likely to stay engaged with the structure that actually supports recovery: outpatient treatment, random UA testing, curfews, 12-step participation.
What This Means If You’re Comparing Homes
We’d encourage you to ask any sober living home the same questions: How many people share a room? Is staff trained to a recognized standard? Is the home certified, or does it just call itself “sober living”? The answers tell you more about what you’re actually getting than the marketing photos do.
